I also will not lie. I myself am guilty of offenses. Now I am on the "other" side of the fence. My boyfriend and I too live in a very small town, with a paper where if you aren't in with the herd on your way of thinking then you just don't get your letter to the editor printed anymore. We are known in our community as "rebellious", because we stand up for our beliefs. Known, and often not liked. There is a particular "private" national club, where you can not only sit and get drunk (we personally have- ah-hem- several family members we are constantly at odds with over this, and not only that, if you feel like it you can take your kids/grandkids with you... My boyfriend recently talked to the chief of police, who basically said that while this is true- we must not forget how much money this place donates to the kids projects (few and far between) and this community. And besides, they have only busted one driver in the last year leaving there... It is a well known fact that here, if you are "somebody" and get stopped you suffer only a talking to, and go on your way. We have two daughters and this, with me being someone who is guilty of drinking and driving in the past, scares me to death. This is a world where children are basically taught it is okay to drink and be an alcoholic if you want. As long as you go to work and do your job hey- a functioning alcoholic is an okay guy! NO IT IS NOT. A homeless guy who drinks every day or the mayor of your town being a drunk is the SAME THING!!! I know of one former public official who actually (FACT) got personalized plates, so the good old arm of the law would never stop her... I believe the drinking and driving thing is a bad, bad thing. But I believe that in reality the beginning has to come of ADULTS showing children that you don't have to down a twelve-pack or drink three bottles of wine at dinner to be happy or have fun... This is the start... And a functioning alcoholic is still an alcoholic- like it or not... And somewhere in that persons life/relationships, something is certainly DYSFUNCTIONAL because of their drinking... Case in point, we don't like our girls being around certain family members because about 97% of the time, they have got their buzz on... SICKENING to us. Someone shouldn't be all ha-ha jolly golly around our 4 1/2 year old just because they are sloshed... I have not had one drop to drink since 2002 and I am proud of it. I am glad my daughters are raised in a home without alcohol. That doesn't make me better than anyone, but this is our personal decision that we as a couple made together, believing it is better for our children. I am sorry to ramble, but this is something very intense for me also!!! Thank you for this blog... Have a good day.

It's a tricky issue, and I'll definitely be thinking about it for a while. To be perfectly honest, my initial gut feeling to the idea of police checkpoints was anger. I don't necessarily believe it's a violation of our rights, but it does feel invasive.

On the other hand, people (at least people that I know) seem to be taking driving under the influence less and less seriously, ignoring the fact that it has **severe** consequences. Not just to themselves, but to the innocents with the misfortune to be sharing the road with them.

So maybe checkpoints are a good thing. Something's got to get these people off the road. =P But I still can't make myself like the idea.

Your debate opponent's argument seems very poorly stated to me. And seriously? Anit-American? What??? Pfffft.

I'm not going to lie, I'm guilty of having driven under the influence more than once in my life. I'm lucky to have never hurt anyone, myself, or gotten caught. I'm in no way proud of it.

Having said that I'm older now and appreciate that checkpoints are there to keep us safe as a whole. And those other commenters are pure idiots if they believe it takes away our civil rights.

You know what else takes our civil rights away? Being killed by a driver under the influence...
